Shell Offshore, Inc. Auger Platform Integrated Control System Helps Shell Maximize Offshore Production
Shell Offshore applied the latest deep-water drilling and production
technologies to tap immense oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico. Its
Auger tension leg platform, located 150 miles off the coast of Louisiana
and
2,860 feet off the sea bottom, demanded a very high level of reliability
and maintainability. The Auger tension-leg platform consists of a hull and work deck; essentially a self-contained production system with a small city attached. Each system has its own specific control needs but is also dependent on the operation of other inter-related systems. Successful operation required critical, coordinated control of drilling, production, marine and utilities subsystems. |

"Operators can get a better feel for how to operate and maintain the platform than they could if they didn't have the integrated PLC®-based control system." -- Larry Forster, Senior Facilities Engineer, Shell Offshore. | ||

The Genesis SPAR project presented CPU with the unique challenge of integrating its marine system components for floating production platforms with a SPAR-wide distributed control system (DCS). Working with Chevron, Foxboro, and J. Ray McDermott engineers, CPU developed and deployed the mooring advisory, ballast advisory load management, environmental/position monitoring, riser tension monitoring, and simulation applications for Genesis. For more information J.Ray McDermott is located at: www.jraymcdermott.com/projects/genesis.htm and www.memagazine.org/backissues/may00/features/water/water.html.

European Southern Observatory
European Southern Observatory scientists designed and implemented the largest ground-based telescope to date. Set atop a Chilean mountain, Cerro Paranal, this telescope sees farther into the universe than any other. CPU played a pivotal role in this project. A complex computer "tool kit", used for a wide variety of applications, was personalized to meet the scientists' specifications. CPU is pleased to have played a role in making optimum control of the giant telescopes possible.

Theme Park Attraction Development
The theme park industry can be summarized as "the serious business of fun," a phrase coined by the theme park association, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Park facilities and their integral attractions carefully segregate the "onstage", or public, side of the park from the "backstage," or business side of the operation. On the business side, our theme park clients' operations are not very different from the operations of our petrochemical and industrial clients. CPU has teamed with PhilBAr, Inc. and Thola Productions, theme park attraction developers, to provide attraction-level and park-wide integration and enterprise integration.
